New Oasis in Jamaica’s Bustling City

February 1st, 2010

KINGSTON, JAMAICA — White-sand beaches on the north coast or lush, green countryside of Jamaica come to mind when thinking of a winter respite–not its capital city, Kingston.

With news of high crime rate spilling out of garrisons, Kingston does not exactly beckon a jaded traveler who craves authenticity and relaxation. But while there in the Caribbean’s largest cosmopolitan center, I visit one of its newest hotels: the 109-room Spanish Court Hotel.

Inside the imposing, Spanish-influenced building, the elegant lobby is paneled with black, teak and jatobá woods. Bright, red walls accented with strategically placed garden flowers, local paintings and photographs evoke classic  SoHo chic—tinged with Jamaican aesthetics.

A weary traveler is soon ushered into a standard room, which is like an oasis in an Arabian desert. My experience defies expectations of sterile, overpriced, name-brand hotels that are culturally detached from the rhythms of exotic places far from their home base.

This is clearly not the case at the Spanish Court Hotel.

NEW YORK TIMES – Kingstson: Trading Beach Chairs for Bar Stools

December 11th, 2009

IT was a steamy Saturday night in Kingston, Jamaica, and the Sky Bar was jammed with its usual weekend crowd: professionals in their 20s and 30s, by all appearances fit for the next flight to South Beach. Ladies in strappy stilettos and sundresses mixed with men in jeans and crisp blazers while the R & B-heavy soundtrack veered from Stevie Wonder to Ne-Yo and Kanye West.

Big up Kingston – The Spanish Court Hotel

June 27th, 2009

Hotels provoke strong reactions among travelers. Stay at a really terrible, cookie-cutter property, and it’s likely to color an entire trip. Just the opposite is also true – when a traveler finds himself at truly unique hotel, aligned with the rhythms and particularities of a destination, tempered by friendly hospitality, it can vastly improve any travel experience.

Spanish Court – Café serves up a tasty menu

June 14th, 2009

It is not yet officially opened, but the Spanish Court Café located at the Spanish Court Hotel is already getting good reviews about its creative and, of course, tasty dishes.

Beautifully styled in black and off-white, including the tables and seats, the restaurant is located right off the lobby and ground floor of the hotel. Within seconds of entering, it is quite easy to forget the busy events just outside the doors on the streets of St Lucia Avenue and Trafalgar Road where it sits.

Spanish Court Hotel Set for June Debut in Kingston, Jamaica

June 3rd, 2009

The Spanish Court Hotel in Kingston, Jamaica will open June 14 as the city’s first new hotel in 40 years. Hotel owner Christopher Issa, a Kingston native whose family is known as tourism pioneers, tapped architect Oscar Garcia to transform the former Spanish Court Shopping Centre into a 107-room boutique property. Garcia preserved the structure’s existing Spanish-influenced exterior and arches on the ground floor. Exterior corridors became interior ones, and additional floors were added.

Spanish Court Hotel to Open in New Kingston, Jamaica

June 3rd, 2009

The Crissa Group is launching the Spanish Court Hotel in New Kingston on June 14. This first new hotel in Kingston in nearly 40 years fills a need in Jamaica’s capital and thriving cultural center for a hotel with unabashed style, great dining and contemporary amenities to which guests of urban hotels in particular are accustomed. Designer Alison Antrobus creates sparks in comfy, residential elements and Jamaican-made appointments with bold colors, patterns, shapes and materials in the public spaces, while ultramodern rooms and suitesncorporate large flat-screen TVs and soaking tubs. An infinity-edge lap pool rises out of the hotel’s second floor Sky Terrace and a sundeck offers a reminder that this metropolitan setting is in the Caribbean. In the evenings, guests can lime at the Sky Bar, considered to be Kingston’s newest and hottest bar, with distinct views of the high rise buildings in the foreground and the beautiful Blue Mountains surrounding Kingston in the background.
